The short answer
Trucker Tools suits a broker who wants load tracking and capacity tools from the same vendor, and who works with many owner-operators and small carriers. Transport Topics reported that it supported 350,000 of them when DAT bought it in December 2024.
Look at something else if you want tracking kept separate from your capacity tools, or if the test at the end of this page shows your team still working out by hand which loads need a person.
We sell one of the alternatives. Everything said about Trucker Tools here comes from its own public pages and one news report, listed at the bottom with the date we read them.
What Trucker Tools does well
Getting started asks little of the driver. Text to Track runs over SMS or WhatsApp, and the load tracking page says, "All that's required is the driver's phone number." It promises "location pings every five minutes" and adds ELD, temperature and trailer tracking through integrations. For a broker booking a new carrier on a Tuesday afternoon, a phone number is about the lowest bar there is.
The alerts are specific. Out of Range Alerts warn when a driver is likely to miss a pickup, Off Route Alerts catch unexpected deviations, and there are running late statuses, automated email alerts and custom geofencing. The page also lists detention insights, a driver verification step before assignment, and tracks you can share with shippers, brokers and co-brokers.
Reach helps too. The homepage shows "2.5M+ App Downloads" and "350K Unique MCs in Network", and the same company offers a Smart Load Board. LoadSignal has neither a load board nor a carrier network: we do not help you find a truck, only track the one you booked.
What DAT ownership changes
DAT Freight & Analytics bought Trucker Tools in a deal that closed on December 17, 2024, with terms undisclosed, according to Transport Topics. The report said Trucker Tools would keep operating under its current leadership. We have no inside knowledge of the plans, so here is what a buyer can check.
If you already pay DAT, ask how Trucker Tools is sold to you. Find out whether tracking can be bought alone, how the contracts relate, and what happens to the tracking price if you drop a DAT product. Neither product page we read gives a price and we found no pricing page, so all of this comes down to the quote.
One vendor for capacity and tracking has real appeal, because the carriers you find are already in its network. The cost is that your tracking choice and your load board choice may end up tied together. Whether that bothers you depends on how much you rely on other sources of capacity.
At a glance
The Trucker Tools column uses the pages we read on November 2, 2026. Where those pages were silent we say so, which tells you about the pages and nothing about the product.
| Compare | Trucker Tools | LoadSignal |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Brokers tracking and sourcing capacity; a separate side for carriers | US brokers, carriers and 3PLs moving truck freight, roughly a hundred to a couple of thousand loads a month |
| Starting a track | Driver's phone number, by SMS or WhatsApp | Driver's phone number, then the driver app or a browser link; or a carrier share link pasted or emailed to the load |
| Other position sources | ELD, temperature and trailer tracking integrations | Samsara and Motive ELD connections (Beta) |
| Alerts | Out of range, off route, running late, geofences | Eleven detectors, thresholds set by your organization, ranked in one queue |
| Detention | Detention insights | Claim drafted from GPS time at the stop, waits for your approval |
| AI | Its terms of service cover AI functions it may introduce; the product pages we read do not describe any, so ask what runs today | Reads rate confirmations, emails and driver texts, and drafts updates that wait for a person by default |
| Load board | Yes, Smart Load Board | No |
| Price | Not on the pages we read | No list price. Quote based on load volume |
Other options
Descartes MacroPoint and FourKites are large networks that sell AI agents, and they fit brokers with mixed freight or shippers who ask for them by name. project44 belongs on the list if a shipper requires it, and LoadSignal can send positions into a shipper's project44 shipment (Beta).
If your main complaint is the phone, voice AI agents that call drivers are a separate category worth a look. At a few dozen loads a month, a dispatcher and a spreadsheet may do.
Where LoadSignal fits, and where it does not
LoadSignal watches active loads, raises the ones that need a person, and shows how old the evidence is. A tracking link that goes quiet gets re-sent within limits, and the driver can get a check-in text, depending on the rules you turn on. A driver's reply is read and checked against GPS. Carriers dispatching their own trucks can use the same board. ETAs are a planning estimate, not a guarantee.
Drivers have three routes: the driver app, a browser link if they will not install anything, or a share link from their carrier's ELD, which many carriers already send. Samsara, Motive, Nomad and the EVA family of ELDs are supported, and loads come in from your TMS (Rose Rocket, Turvo, McLeod, Tai and Aljex connections are in beta), from emailed rate confirmations or from a spreadsheet.
Stay with Trucker Tools if finding capacity and tracking it in one product matters most to you. We are in early access, we have no public customer references yet, and our network is whatever carriers you already use. The security page says we have not completed a third-party audit.
What to test
Take a load that went badly last month and walk each vendor through it. When did the tool first show the problem, who was told, and what did it do next? A carrier that sends its own Samsara or Motive link is another good test, because that link has to land on the right load without someone copying it across.
Check the driver's side too. Follow one text from the driver's phone and see how many taps it takes, what it says about who sees the position, and when tracking stops. Then score each vendor on our demo scorecard. To try LoadSignal on a lane, request early access or contact sales for a quote.
