What the driver actually does
For a carrier you have just booked, another app installation can add a step before you get any position at all. LoadSignal's browser link gives that driver a way to share location for the load without creating an account.
- Your dispatcher sends a tracking link to the driver number on the load.
- The driver opens the link and reads the location-sharing explanation.
- They choose to share location and grant the browser's location permission.
- The browser sends positions while the page remains open and able to report.
A phone number by itself cannot locate a driver. Sending an SMS does not turn tracking on. The driver's participation and device permissions are required, and the driver should interact with the phone only when safely parked.
Browser tracking has a real limit
Do not choose a text link expecting uninterrupted background tracking. Closing the tab, suspending the browser, losing signal, or revoking location permission can interrupt reporting. A successful first position does not mean the phone will report for the rest of the trip.
The native driver app is the option for background location through locked screens, subject to device permissions and connectivity. A connected ELD can provide vehicle positions without depending on the driver's browser. The best source depends on what the carrier can provide.

What happens when tracking stops?
Location freshness is part of exception detection. When an active shipment's feed meets the stale or lost criteria, dispatch can see the gap and follow up. Timing depends on the load phase, configured thresholds, and the next evaluation; a closed tab does not instantly create an alert.
LoadSignal also has bounded tracking-link resend and Operator workflows. Their settings determine what can run automatically. A resend still needs the driver to open the link and allow sharing; it cannot bypass a phone's permission controls.
Keep the link scoped to the shipment
The driver link is specific to the load and expires. Tracking ends with the load. It is different from the customer-facing tracking link, which lets a recipient view shipment progress. Keep the driver's link with the person who is meant to share location.
