Load tracking software
"Load tracking software" covers three different kinds of product that solve different problems. Compare the tracking sources, exception handling and automatic actions each product includes before choosing one for your brokerage.
The three kinds
Shipper-side visibility platforms bring visibility across carriers and brokers into a shipper's operation. If a customer requires a particular platform, check how it connects to your existing tracking and customer-update process.
TMS tracking modules come with the system that stores your freight. Capabilities vary. Check whether yours receives live positions, detects exceptions and triggers follow-up, or mainly records the statuses and notes your team enters.
Driver-app trackers get a position per load by having the driver install an app or tap a link. They answer "where is this truck" well. Check what happens after a position arrives: does the product detect a problem, chase a driver who never tapped, and give the customer an update?
The question that sorts them
Ask one question of any tool in this category: when something goes wrong, who notices? A position feed that nobody is watching is a check call you make with your eyes instead of your phone. The work that costs brokerages dispatcher-hours is not getting the dot on the map. It is deciding, every few minutes, all day, which loads need a person, and doing something about the ones that do.

Five questions for any vendor
These are the questions that exposed the differences when we were building. Ask them of us too.
What does it ask of the driver? An install per driver, a tap per load, or nothing because the ELD reports. Whatever the answer, some carriers will refuse it, so ask what the fallback is.
What happens when the data stops? Phones die and links go untapped. If the tool's answer is a gap on the map, you are still the one watching for gaps. Silence should raise its own alarm.
Who decides which loads need attention? If the answer is "you, from a dashboard", the checking hasn't gone away, it has moved to a screen.
What happens when nobody responds to an alert? An alert that can be missed is a check call that can be skipped. Ask whether it escalates, to whom, and when it stops.
Can it message customers without a person? The answer you want is no, or at least a switch you control. An automated apology sent on stale data does more damage than the delay it describes.

When not to buy it
If you move a handful of loads a week, a spreadsheet and a phone may be enough, and software would be overhead. If what you need is billing and settlements, you need a TMS, and LoadSignal isn't one. And if a customer requires you to feed their visibility platform, that requirement stands regardless of what you run internally.
